The power we already possess

This article is one of the best reflections on the Ordain Women movement that I've read, and I've been researching this a lot lately.

It is an in-depth look the most important facets of this issue. It presents some insightful commentary on a major issue facing the Church and, I believe, the world. The way we view the roles and powers of men and women are evolving, and a lot of the perspectives articulated in that article resonated with me.

I include it here for my own future access and reference - but if you find yourself an interested party, by all means, have a read.

The Cooperative Paradigm

This article is an in-depth and interesting examination of the role of women in the LDS church. I'm putting it up here on my blog because I want to have access to it in the future, and because I think it is a worthwhile read for men and women who engage in Church service.

As a woman in the church I have always felt that my worth and value were professed emphatically. The doctrine has never portrayed women in an inferior capacity. I also believe that there is room for improvement in the way that this translates into leadership and administration. The cooperative paradigm described in the article is an approach that respects church structure and revealed truths while opening the right doors for moderate change.

General Conference April 2012

General Conference happens twice a year in April and October. As it draws closer, I find myself anxiously awaiting conference weekend. I always come away feeling inspired, encouraged, loved and blessed. The profound truths that are taught resonate with something deep inside of me. I hope that I become better for it.

This year, Husband and I will be watching from home, sometimes with friends and sometimes with family. Thank goodness for gc.lds.org that makes it so easy to watch conference no matter where we are! Sessions are at 10 am and 2 pm (MST) on Saturday and Sunday March 31st and April 1st.

General Conference

This weekend is the 181st semiannual General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Two days to listen to some of the most brilliant men and women in the world give counsel on the most important issues of our time - how to help those in need, how to pursue peace on our own lives, how to build strong families and raise responsible children, how to face the personal challenges that threaten our own happiness and well-being.

I look forward to this weekend every year and I always come away feeling stronger.

If you're interested in catching any of the conference it will be available here, here, here and here starting Saturday morning at 10 am MST.

Bye Em!

Today my youngest sister left to serve a mission for the LDS Church in Lima, Peru for 18 months.

I cried a 4 cup pyrex full of tears (yes, I measured) and then immediately began writing her a letter that mostly consisted of my trying to draw a llama.

Llamas are from Peru, and you know how I feel about llamas.

I miss her already, but I admire her so much for her bravery, her commitment to her faith and her belief in serving others.

Good luck Em. Be good, be safe, see you soon.

Mormons and Blogging

If you spent much time trolling the bologsphere you may have noticed that an inordinate number of the most popular blogs are authored by LDS women.

At first I thought it was just me... I'm LDS, so the blogs that many of my other LDS friends linked to were written by their friends and so on. The longer I have spent traversing the internet, however, the more I have become convinced that it is more than coincidence.

Other people are starting to notice as well. There is a particularly interesting discussion going on over at Design Mom. And this article on the same subject was written by an atheist feminist in New York.

There are a lot of theories about why Mormon women blog. We are taught to record our lives by writing in journals and blogging is a natural extension of that. The 13th Article of Faith states that we seek after things which are virtuous, lovely and of good report, and blogging is a natural way to share the things that we find uplifting, creative and inspiring. Some people think that making do with what we have, being thrifty, and coming from families with tons of kids, just lend themselves to developing those enviable skills of being creative and crafty - which make perfect blog fodder. We are also very accustomed to operating within a community - sharing the burden, sharing the joy, sharing the ideas - and blogging is the modern and convenient equivalent of a sewing circle. I believe that all of these factors have influeced the rise of the Mormon Mommy Bloggers.

The theory that holds the most water for me is that these women, who are so bright and have so much talent, have finally been given a platform that allows them to share their ideas in a way that doesn't take them away from their vital work as mothers in the home.

Blogging has given a public voice to these women that does not require them to compromise their beliefs or their values. And they have a lot to say.

What do you think? Have you noticed this trend? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Epic Weekend

For months I've been working with the Redlands Service Club Council and the Mormon Helping Hands to organize our Community Service Day on April 30th. We planned two gigantic projects: Landscaping 2 miles of median along Redlands Boulevard and painting 4,800 square feet of benches at the Redlands Bowl.

I am thrilled to say that the effort was well worth it and the result was spectacular. We hoped for 1,500 volunteers and we got 2,400. We hoped to get the work done in 4 hours and it all got done in 2. I hoped to get at least one positive story in the media about our projects and we had 8 newspaper articles, 1 radio interview, 2 online videos and 1 television highlight.

And to top it all ofr, the next day I turned 28 and was showered with love, affection and appreciation from my wonderful family and friends.

THEREFORE, I apologize for the interruption in my regulary prolific blogging schedule. Have no fear, I'll be back on track tomorrow.

In the meantime, here are a few pictures from Saturday's projects...

Vamos a la mission! Peru por vida!

My sister Emily will be serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Peru Lima South Mission.

Congrats Em! We are so excited for you.

Besides the fact that Emily is going there, do you know what else is awesome about Peru? Llamas and more llamas.

I love llamas.

LDS General Conference - October 2010

What a weekend! I got to spend most of it watching and listening to General Conference. Everytime I listen to the Prophet and Apostles, my conviction and dedication grow stronger. I want to right my wrongs, stand taller, act kinder and do more good in the world. I feel fortified, uplifted and ready to face whatever challenges are ahead of me.

I am so grateful for the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. For me, through out my life, it has been a light in the darkness and an anchor in the storms. The better I live it, the happier I am.  In Romans Chapter 8, it is written, "Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulatoin, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?... Nay in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded  that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Jesus Christ out Lord."

It is times like this when I feel that love stronger than ever.

The Conference Center is Salt Lake City is where General Conference is held and then broadcast throughout the world...

Center: President Thomas S. Monson, Left: Elder Henry B. Eyring, Right: Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf...

More information about the beliefs and doctrines of the church are available at Mormon.org. Or if you have a question for me, leave a comment and your email and I'll do my best to answer it.

Complete video recordings of all of the sessions of General Conference are available here.

LA Weekend

My amazing weekend started a little early when my sister came into town on Thursday night and we got manicures and pedicures. It's been awhile for me and I don't think I've ever enjoyed a pedicure that much. Plus, I'm loving the OPI Russian Navy color that I got.

Friday night, IKF and I stayed in and I got to try all of the recipes I've been itching to get to this week while he worked on a paper. I test drove the Apple Dumpling recipe, which got rave reviews. SO easy! SO delicious! I also tried a new Candy Cookie recipe that I'll post shortly. My Sunday School class couldn't get enough of the peanut butter cups in peanut butter cookies.

Afterwards we watched the FIRST Harry Potter movie, thus beginning our Harry Potter Movie Marathon leading up to the release of the next movie in November. I couldn't get over how cute Harry, Ron and Hermione were back then!

Saturday was the best, however. The inlaws organized a trip to the LA Temple and then the traditional dinner at Junior's afterwards. It was my first time in the giant, gorgeous, Los Angeles Temple. Going their and then eating at the famous deli afterwards felt like a right of passage. Plus I love my inlaws, we have a really good time together.

I got the potato pancakes. Dip them in sour cream and applesauce and you're in heaven. It had me missing Veselka like crazy though.

Sunday was church, naps and family! Aaaaaaand more baking. Because, that's what I do. Mom had all the right ingredients, so after a rousing game or two of Blockus3D, we pulled out the old stand-by: Chocolate Cover Cherry Cake. A few people opted to try the apple dunplings instead and were well pleased.

How was your weekend? Do anything different?

Next weekend I've got my fingers crossed for camping....

... And I'm a Mormon.

My roommate from New York, Sarah, writes a wonderful blog called Sarahnaded. In it she shares funny, touching, beautiful, and often insightful  thoughts and stories about her life as a nanny and student and girlfriend in New York City. Her blog is very well written and I highly recommend it. Just be warned that you will most likely fall in love with this girl and her frank, open honesty in three posts or less.

She recently posted this series of videos that had me glued, wide-eyed to the computer screen.

Like all of them we are doing our best to pursue our passions and to be a better person everyday. Being dedicated to a belief system doesn't turn you into an automaton, in fact, I find that it enriches the unique and wonderful talents and attributes that are already there.

People used to ask me all of the time, "Are you Mormon?," in an almost accusatory tone that I never understood. I always responded, "I am a lot of things, and yes, Mormon is one of them."

I am a blogger, a cupcake baker, a scuba diver, a world traveler, a business professional and a wife. My name is Sara Frost and I'm a Mormon.

Michelle's 5 Things

Continuing our 5 things project: Michelle!

Here are the 5 things that Michelle wants to accomplish in this lifetime:

Explore all 7 continents
Marry in the temple and raise a righteous family
Speak 3 foreign languages fluently
Do something every day to draw closer to Christ
Be the kind of old woman that makes young women say, "I want to be like her when I'm old."

... Have I ever mentioned that Michelle is descended from pirates? And that her family TOTALLY celebrates "talk like a pirate" day? And that she has the coolest last name ever? Oh I did? Well good.

Letterpress Temple

How GORGEOUS is this artwork by Cameron Moll?!?

It combines three of my favorite things: Letterpress, Typography and the Temple! The original run is sold out, so I really, really hope he does another run.
